I graduated with a degree in German and History in 1998, following which I worked for a year as a volunteer holocaust educator at a concentration camp memorial site in Germany delivering seminars and guided tours, translating archival material and working with former prisoners of the camp. After completing a year’s voluntary service, I returned to Leicester and worked for both Leicester City Council and Leicestershire County Council’s museum services in a wide variety of roles including front of house duties, research, outreach and, more recently, managing the County Council’s support for voluntary and community-led museums and heritage groups, which included advising organisations on a wide range of museum issues such as collections care, learning and education, exhibitions and display and Museum Accreditation as well as issues around organisational and staff development, project management, business planning, governance and supporting funding applications. I also supported the Leicestershire and Rutland Heritage Forum to develop the support it is able to offer the local museum community and advocate for the work of museums to partners on a local, regional and national basis. Whilst working full time, I completed my MA in Museum Studies by distance learning at the University of Leicester with a dissertation that focused on how museums deliver on local political outcomes and agenda.

My responsibilities in the School relate to three key areas of work:

Learning Development:

  • Implementing new pedagogic initiatives focusing on distance and flexible learning programmes
  • Devising innovative new learning materials with museum and cultural sector partners
  • Managing the School's network of associate tutors
  • Overseeing the annual summer school for distance learning students

Diversity, equality and inclusion:

I am the departmental lead for Diversity, Equality and Inclusion, including chairing the departmental equalities group, leading on developments relating to our Athena SWAN award and contributing to other institution-wide equalities initiatives. I am a member of the University's Diversity Champions network. I sit on the Advance HE Athena Swan Governance Committee.

Business administration:

I oversee many of the School's professional services functions, including managing 4 members of professional services staff who, together, support all aspects of research, teaching and administration within the department.
