Professor Jonathan Wilcox from the University of Iowa will be revealing the humour embedded within Anglo-Saxon sermons, and exploring the performance from the pulpit of these early English texts.

Professor Wilcox expertise lies in the literature, language, and thought of early medieval England. His publications centre on uncovering the nature of Anglo-Saxon christian culture, and on contemporary manuscripts as a foundation for our knowledge of the Anglo-Saxon intellectual world. He is also renowned as a scholar of gestures and emotions in the past. All these aspects will be combined in his Brixworth lecture which will explore within a real Anglo-Saxon church, how preachers engaged their congregations through the power of the spoken word.
