Molecular and Cell Biology at Leicester

Welcome to the Department of Molecular & Cell Biology. The Department hosts around 40 academic staff, forming a coherent research community with internationally recognised research strength in:

  • Structure, Dynamics and Assembly of Macromolecular Complexes
  • Single Molecule Approaches to Understanding Biological Systems
  • Mechanisms and Principles of Regulation of Gene Expression
  • Channels, Receptors and Signalling

The Department delivers a number of outstanding undergraduate (BSc) taught courses:

We also provide postgraduate (MSc) taught courses in Cancer Cell and Molecular Biology, and Bioinformatics. We also host a large number of postgraduate (PhD) researchers from the UK and around the world.

The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology was formed in 2015 from the Department of Biochemistry, founded in 1961 by Sir Hans Kornberg, FRS, with the inclusion of approximately half of the former Department of Cell Physiology & Pharmacology.

The Department is housed within the state-of-the-art research building, the Henry Wellcome Building. The Department has >40 academic staff/principal investigators, a thriving research community, and holds a considerable portfolio of grant-funding.

On the 30th June 2016, The Leicester Institute of Structural and Chemical  Biology (LISCB) was inaugurated, bringing together established strengths in structural biology, chemical biology and single-molecule research. Eleven members of our department are core members of the new institute.

Members of the Department work closely with The Leicester Drug Discovery and Diagnostics Centre (LD3) which translates the University’s high quality biomedical research into medicines, therapies and diagnostic tests with ‘real world’ benefit for patients.

We are proud holders of an Athena SWAN silver award.
