DUTCH Language Tutor required

for ‘Languages at Leicester’ short courses programme

from April 2020

£35.58 per teaching hour*

Applications are invited from candidates with native or near-native language proficiency, to prepare and deliver DUTCH language courses at Beginners* and Post-beginners levels* (but also able to deliver lesson at higher levels for future terms) on the ‘Languages at Leicester’ programme for non-specialist and/or Languages for Business courses run by the University of Leicester.

Successful candidates will be appointed at DUTCH language tutor at Languages at Leicester. Over the summer term April/July (10 weeks) and the next academic year 2020/21 (October 2020 to March 2021 – 20 weeks), the candidate will be required to teach DUTCH at Beginners and Post-beginners levels. The candidate will also need to be available to attend a staff meetings and training session that will take place around mid-April 2020.

Please note that this is an hourly paid position (part-time) and the successful candidate will be required to teach one or two courses. All our courses are dependent on a minimum number of students enrolling. Lessons take place on evenings on weekdays (Mondays to Thursdays).

Candidates must demonstrate skills in modern communicative approaches and show willingness to develop resources to support foreign and second language learning. A teaching qualification would be an advantage, as would recent experience of teaching in the UK, preferably in adult education and languages, but not exclusively

*Equivalent to A1 and A2 Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Job Outline

The successful applicants will be directly responsible to the Languages at Leicester Coordinator. They will be required to provide high quality tuition in the relevant language(s), and to prepare and review course work and administration, including attendance at meetings, as required.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  1. To provide high quality tuition in the specified modern foreign and community language(s).
  2. To keep abreast of improvements in the methodologies of language teaching.
  3. To maintain information and records associated with teaching courses in these languages as may be required, e.g. registers, schemes of work, lesson plans and language tests.
  4. To assess students’ progress and achievements through different methodologies and formats (including exams) and provide constructive and positive feedback to students as required to support their learning.
  5. To support independent learning through the use of a Virtual Learning Environment and create materials according to the levels and courses (Training can be provided).
  6. To collaborate with colleagues and to assist in the development of ‘Languages at Leicester’ courses in the designated languages as required.
  7. Attending training and meetings as required.
  8. To comply with University and School of Arts’ policies on teaching quality, equality and diversity, and health and safety in all aspects of work.

Person Specification

Profile of personal skills, qualifications, knowledge, abilities, competencies and experience:


  • Native or near-native language proficiency in the language(s) offered.
  • Demonstrable skills on modern communicative approaches to foreign and second language teaching and learning.
  • Ability to work constructively with students of mixed abilities and from varying cultural backgrounds within a single group.
  • Enthusiastic approach to teaching a language to non-linguists and/or non-native speakers of English.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of adult learners.
  • Willingness to develop resources to support teaching and learning.
  • Ability to work positively with colleagues.
  • Good organisational and interpersonal skills.
  • Competence and accuracy in maintaining administrative records.
  • Willingness to keep abreast of improvements in the methodologies of language teaching.


  • Recognised teaching qualification.
  • Recent experience of teaching in the UK, preferably in adult education and/or at beginners’ level.
  • Experience in teaching languages for business.
  • Basic knowledge on the use of Virtual Learning Environments (i.e.: BlackBoard/CourseSites). 

Terms and Conditions

Staff are responsible to the ‘Languages at Leicester’ Co-ordinator, for such teaching and related work as may be allocated to them.

The appointment is subject to the University Charter, Statues, Ordinance and Regulations and to the Standard Terms and Conditions of Appointment for Academic-Related staff.

Tutor fees will be paid at the rate of £35.58 per teaching hour. Most classes last two hours*.

*The job is on a part-time basis and tutors are hourly paid. Most of our courses take place on evenings (6-8 pm), one class a week over 10 or 20 weeks, according to length, either on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays.
