LATIN Beginners - Pre-sessional (level 1)

latin_circled_flagThis Intensive Pre-sessional LATIN course is intended for learners with no prior knowledge of Latin (or so little that you effectively want to start again from scratch). The course aims to enable students to engage autonomously with texts in Latin from a variety of sources. This training will enable you to start the academic year better prepared to carry out research.

Course content

This course will take place at an intensive pace to enable students to read Latin texts from a large range of time periods and a large range of sources in a very short length of time.

Each morning teaching session will focus on fundamental aspects of Latin grammar, including both morphology and syntax. The following supported independent learning sessions will enable learners to strengthen their language skills and begin reading texts immediately, as well as build a working vocabulary, thereby increasing the amount and level of your Latin knowledge with every session.

Each afternoon teaching session will deal with Latin epigraphy: students will be taught the basics skills in order to read a Latin inscription, and some basics of Roman numismatics will be taught as well. During the following supported independent learning sessions, students will be able to engage independently with real examples from a wide range of inscription typologies.

You will also develop dictionary skills and practise reading and translation strategies to interpret and translate texts in Latin. You will be reading texts immediately and developing interpreting skills. As the course progresses, the tutor will find out the genres and periods most appropriate to the interests of each student and will tailor readings accordingly. Hence, we encourage students to bring when available their own materials relevant to their subject area and/or interest.

Entry level

The course is suitable for absolute beginners, and no particular knowledge of grammar terminology is required. The course is also suitable for those who have a previous knowledge of Latin, but are intentioned to revise it.

Our approach

This course aims to guide the learner from a basic level towards independent reading of authentic texts in Latin. Reading skills are developed by systematically working through short texts and focusing on the recognition of key grammatical structures (verbs, tenses, sentence patterns and word order, negation, nouns, connectors, pronouns, adjectives, prepositions, the passive, idioms, etc.). Learners will also develop dictionary skills and practise reading strategies to interpret and translate texts in Latin, as well as the ability to engage with short Latin inscriptions on stone and coins.

Students will be encouraged to seek opportunities to learn and practise outside the classroom taking advantage of learning resources provided by tutors and the programme. The group size is limited to 12 students and planned to allow intensive interactive practice with individual feedback and advice on progress.

Timetable

This Intensive Summer course will run for two weeks commencing on Monday 11th September and ending on Friday 22nd September 2017. Lessons will take place mornings and afternoons, both followed by Supported Independent Learning sessions.
