Gerard is a general practitioner (GP) and medical educator. He has been actively involved with undergraduate medical education since 2009.

Gerard joined Leicester Medical School in September 2020 as an Associate Professor and Director of MBChB Phase 1. In this role Gerard has responsibility for the academic running of the early years (years 1 and 2) of the medical degree programme.

Before joining Leicester Medical School Gerard was lead for undergraduate medical education at the school of medicine at the University of Central Lancashire; in that role Gerard led on academic quality and operations for the MBBS programme, and Medical Sciences programme. Prior to this Gerard was a Lecturer in Medical Education (PBL) at the Graduate Entry Medical School, University of Limerick and prior to this an NHS Scotland Fellow at University of St Andrews.
