English Language Requirements

In order to study Medicine at the University of Leicester, your written and spoken English must be good enough that you will fully understand, and benefit from the course.

You can demonstrate your English language ability in any one of these ways:

We also accept the International Baccalaureate, for which we require at least 36 points overall, including three Higher Level subjects (including Chemistry and Biology), and three Standard Level subjects. Each subject must be passed with a minimum of six points. We do not consider bonus points.

All applicants must have evidence of academic study within three years of application.

Antigua and Barbuda

Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) with grade 1 in three 2-unit courses, including Chemistry and Biology (excluding applied maths).

Australia

Between 98.5 and 99.5 in the Australia Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR).  Additionally, you must complete the relevant regional secondary school qualification.

Bahamas

Bahamas Junior Certificate is not sufficient. To apply to Leicester Medical School, you would first need to take additional qualifications such as A-levels or the International Baccalaureate.

Bangladesh

Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC)/Intermediate Certificate is not sufficient. To apply to Leicester Medical School, you would first need to take additional qualifications such as A-levels or the International Baccalaureate.

Barbados

Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) with grade 1 in three 2-unit courses, including Chemistry and Biology (excluding applied maths).

Brunei

Brunei-Cambridge A-level with grades of AAA, including Chemistry.

Cameroon

Cameroon Baccalauréat with at least 15 out of 20, including 15 in Chemistry and Biology.

Canada

We will consider all Canadian Provincial Secondary School qualifications. A typical example would be the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), with six grade 12 subjects at 12U, U/C (or M) courses (including Chemistry and Biology) and a minimum 85% in each subject.

Ghana

West African Senior School Certificate Examination is not sufficient. To apply to Leicester Medical School, you would first need to take additional qualifications such as A-levels or the International Baccalaureate.

Guyana

GCE A-level with AAA, including Chemistry

India

SSC (Senior Certificate) Year XII qualification is not sufficient. To apply to Leicester Medical School, you would first need to take additional qualifications such as A-levels or the International Baccalaureate.

Jamaica

Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) with grade 1 in three 2-unit courses, including Chemistry and Biology (excluding applied maths).

Kenya

Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) is not sufficient. To apply to Leicester Medical School, you would first need to take additional qualifications such as A-levels or the International Baccalaureate.

Malawi

Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) is not sufficient. To apply to Leicester Medical School, you would first need to take additional qualifications such as A-levels or the International Baccalaureate.

Malaysia

Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (Malaysian Higher School Certificate) with AAA, including Chemistry and Biology. Please note that Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM/Certificate of Education) or Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) is not sufficient. To apply to Leicester Medical School, you would first need to take additional qualifications such as A-levels or the International Baccalaureate.

Maldives

GCE A-levels with AAA, including Chemistry

Mauritius

Cambridge Overseas Higher School Certificate/GCE A-Level with AAA, including Chemistry

Namibia

Cambridge Overseas Higher School Certificate/GCE A-Level with AAA, including Chemistry

New Zealand

University Entrance Certificate with National Certificates of Educational Achievement (NCEA) at Level 3.

Nigeria

West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) or Senior School Certificate Education (SSCE) is not sufficient. To apply to Leicester Medical School, you would first need to take additional qualifications such as A-levels or the International Baccalaureate.

Pakistan

Higher Secondary School Certificate (SSC) is not sufficient. To apply to Leicester Medical School, you would first need to take additional qualifications such as A-levels or the International Baccalaureate.

Sierra Leone

School leaving qualifications are not sufficient. To apply to Leicester Medical School, you would first need to take additional qualifications such as A-levels or the International Baccalaureate.

Singapore

Singapore Integrated Programme Cambridge A-Levels (SIPCAL) with three A grades at H2 level, including Chemistry and Biology.

South Africa

South African Senior Certificate (with Matriculation endorsement) is not sufficient. To apply to Leicester Medical School, you would first need to take additional qualifications such as A-levels or the International Baccalaureate.

Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan General Certificate of Education (Advanced level) with AAA, including Chemistry

Tanzania

Cambridge Overseas Higher School Certificate (COHSC) or East African Advanced Certificate of Education (EAACE) with AAA.

Trinidad and Tobago

Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) with grade 1 in three 2-unit courses, including Chemistry and Biology, (excluding applied maths).

Uganda

Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) with AAA, including Chemistry.
