Personal details

B.A. (Hons), M.A., Ph.D

I joined the Department of Media and Communication in 2005, having previously worked at De Montfort University (2002-5) and the University of Stirling (1997-2002). I completed my PhD at the University of Sheffield, where I was also a Graduate Teaching Assistant (1994-1997). Across my teaching career I have taught on a variety of full-time, part-time, undergraduate, postgraduate, campus-based, and distance-learning based programmes (both traditional and online). Since arriving at Leicester I have contributed to the expansion and development of the department particularly with regard to the expansion of the department’s Distance Learning portfolio of Master’s programmes. As of January 2013 I have taken on the role of Director of Distance Learning in the Department. Elsewhere, I have achieved Senior Fellow status of the Higher Education Academy in 2013. I have provided material for the Sage Video Collection of education resources, have participated in the university’s learning technologies advisory group, and done consultancy work on distance learning education provision. I have also reviewed book proposals for various publishers, and acted as a referee for journal articles in several publications, and acted as a proposal reviewer for the ESRC.

Teaching

My principle responsibility as Director of Distance Learning Taught Master’s Programmes in the department includes the management of Distance Learning programmes, monitoring and supporting students and tutors, and maintaining and developing course materials. I also contribute to teaching on campus Master’s programmes, on modules dealing with political communication and mass communication theory, as well as supervising Master’s student dissertations. I contribute to teaching on campus undergraduate programmes, teaching political communication, as well as supervising undergraduate dissertations. I also supervise a number of PhD students, and recent doctoral students of mine have studied/are studying topics relating to political communication, journalism and new media technologies in a variety of contexts..

Research

My research interests are focused around: journalism and new media, specifically citizen journalism and questions around citizenship and journalism; political communication, especially elections in the UK, USA and EU; and science, entertainment and television documentary.
