Personal details

  • B.A. (Hons) English and Media, De Montfort University, 1997
  • M.A. Mass Communications, University of Leicester, 1998
  • PhD International Studies, Nottingham Trent University, 2003

During my PhD research at Nottingham Trent University, I gained valuable experience as a part-time Lecturer on a range of Media and Cultural Studies modules and a core Human Geography module.

However, I have always had strong links with the University of Leicester since doing my MA here in 1998 and working as a Teaching Assistant the following year, so was delighted to rejoin the department in 2003 as a full-time Lecturer.

I am a member of the MeCCSA Women’s Media Studies Network. I am also a ‘friend’ (associated membership) of the AHRC Centre for Law, Gender and Sexuality, having presented conference and workshop papers there.

Semester 1

  • MS7023: Theories of Globalisation and New Media (MA Globalisation and Communications)
  • MS7024 Graduate Seminar (co-teach) (MA Globalisation and Communications)

My most recent research has been concerned with sexual citizenship and immigration, which had been the focus of my doctorate research entitled: ‘Akin to Marriage’: Sexual Citizenship, Heterosexism and Immigration in the UK (2003).

This research was concerned with examining immigration policies and debates relating to unmarried couples, along with conducting interviews with same-sex couples who had largely been excluded in both UK policy and academic accounts of immigration.

Arising from this main research, I am also interested in queer and feminist perspectives on identity and representation in the media.
