PhD Topic

Online Civic Engagement and Activism: A Study of Hashtag Activism in Oman

Year of study

Second Year of Study

Brief Description of PhD topic

This study examines contemporary hashtag activism in Oman and the case of the #OmanisWithoutJobs hashtag (#OWJ). This hashtag activism was initially started by a group of Omani young job seekers in September 2017 (and it is still ongoing) to retaliate against unemployment and employment policies that have resulted in both high numbers of educated but unemployed Omanis and large numbers of expats seeking job in the country, making it one of the biggest online civic engagement that the country has witnessed.

The overall aim of this project is to investigate the online civic engagement via Twitter hashtag activism within a controlled media and restrictive political system in Oman. The study will help us develop a better understanding of why and how Twitter is used for the purpose of information sharing amongst Omani youth job seekers during the unemployment crisis, and to what extent hashtag activism cases such as this of #OWJ can contribute to reform unemployment crisis within Oman’s political system.
