Manuel Barenz abstract

Motivations from mathematical physics and topological quantum field  theories have led John Barrett and me to develop an invariant of smooth 4-manifolds that takes as algebraic data a pivotal functor into a ribbon fusion category and operates on the Kirby diagram of a handle decomposition of the manifold. While the main implications are more interesting from a physics viewpoint, the construction itself is still a nice example to see how spherical, braided and ribbon categories play together with topology. I mean "nice" also in the sense that there will be lots of fun knots, links and diagrams to look at.
