Abstract Clemens Berger

Abstract: We develop a general concept of nilpotency for exact Mal'cev and semi-abelian categories, extending the classical notions of nilpotent group and nilpotent Lie algebra. We then relate nilpotency to cross effects of the identity functor, where cross effects are defined "cubically" like in Goodwillie's calculus. Finally, several notions of homotopical nilpotency for simplicial groups are introduced and compared to their topological versions, due to Berstein-Ganea et Biedermann-Dwyer. (The talk is based on joint work with Dominique Bourn and Georg Biedermann.)
