Seventy-second BLOC meeting

Bristol Leicester Oxford Colloquium

The 72nd BLOC meeting will be held on Thursday 24th March 2016 at the University of Bristol. This meeting immediately follows the BMC, which is held from Monday 21 March to Thursday 24 March 2016.

It is hoped that all participants will attend both the BLOC meeting and the BMC. Please note that participants at the BMC MUST register for the BMC.

The BMC webpage is here. The deadline for early bird registration is 1 February 2016, after which date the registration fee will increase; the early registration fee is Standard £75, Student £40. There is an Algebra workshop as part of the BMC on the Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.

The talks are in SM2 in the School of Mathematics, University Walk, Bristol.

2.00-2.45 Emily Cliff (Oxford) Factorisation spaces and chiral algebras

2.50-3.35 Geoff Robinson (Aberdeen/Bristol/Lancaster) Counting simple modules

4.10-4.55 Keith Brown (UEA) Properly stratified quotients of quiver Hecke algebras

Emily Cliff: Factorisation spaces and chiral algebras
Factorisation algebras and chiral algebras are geometric analogues of vertex algebras. In this talk, we will introduce these geometric notions and some of their basic properties, following Beilinson-Drinfeld. The factorisation algebra perspective is particularly helpful because it admits a non-linear analogue, called a factorisation space, which can be used to produce examples of factorisation algebras. The geometry of the underlying space can then be used to study the resulting factorisation algebras. We give examples to show how these techniques can be used in geometry and representation theory.

Geoff Robinson: Counting simple modules
We discuss a recent conjecture made jointly with G. Malle: if B is a p-block with defect group D of a finite group G, then the number of simple modules of B (in characteristic p) is at most the size of the largest elementary Abelian section of D. We discuss evidence for the conjecture, and issues yet to be resolved.

Keith Brown: Properly stratified quotients of quiver Hecke algebras
We construct a new class of finite dimensional quotients of quiver Hecke algebras and study their homological properties.

The organisers of this BLOC meeting are Neil Saunders, Jason Semeraro and Nicole Snashall.

Please let the organisers know if you are coming to this meeting. Please also let them know if you need instructions for car parking.

BLOC is supported by an LMS Scheme 3 grant, which is used to help offset travel costs for participants, with priority given to covering travel and accommodation costs for speakers and postgraduates. Funds are limited so if participants can find funding from other sources that is helpful! For more information about funding from BLOC for this meeting, please email Nicole Snashall.

Travel information is HERE.

There will be time for informal discussions during the meeting.
