During the academic year 2021/2022, I am teaching the pure mathematics module

  • MA1104 Elements of Number Theory
  • MA3152 Complex Analysis
  • MA3153 Number Theory

All course material can be found on Blackboard.

I will also involved with teaching the MAGIC postgraduate PhD course MAGIC 064 Algebraic Topology.

Office hours

Tuesdays 15:00-16:00 (or by appointment via email)

Administrative duties

I am a member of the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences Management Group. I am the Director of Admissions and Recruitment and also responsible for outreach and widening participation.

My publications can be found here.

My major research areas are

  • Algebraic Topology
  • Algebraic Geometry

I am very much interested in interactions between these subjects and in particular in applications of homotopy theory to algebraic geometry.

My recent interests are especially in geometry, topology and arithmetic of moduli stacks. This research has also direct links with arithmetic geometry and mathematical physics.

Research activities

I am a member of the Pure Mathematics Group. I am an organiser of the Transpennine Topology Triangle (TTT), a collaborative research seminar on algebraic topology between Leicester, Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield. I am also an organiser of the East Midlands Seminar in Geometry (EMSG), a collaborative research seminar on algebraic geometry between Nottingham, Leicester, Loughborough and Sheffield. Both are funded by the London Mathematical Society.

I am an organiser of the Longitudinal Algebra and Geometry Open ONline Seminar (LAGOON) in collaboration with ICMS Edinburgh and INI Cambridge.

I am member of the London Mathematical Society (LMS) and the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Leicester representative for the LMS Midlands region. I am currently a Member-at-Large of the LMS Council and a member of the LMS Research Grants Committee.

I am also very much involved with the LMS-IMU-AMMSI scheme Mentoring African Research in Mathematics (MARM).

I am also a correspondent for the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INI) in Cambridge and the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS) in Edinburgh.

I am a frequent visitor to

Research seminars

We run the weekly Leicester Pure Mathematics Seminar. We also run a Geometry and Topology Research Seminar regularly. Recent topics have included etale groupoids, differentiable stacks and etale homotopy theory.

Research meetings

I was an organiser of the Midlands Universities Pure Mathematics Seminar (MUPMS), the 17th British Topology Meeting and the 24th British Topology Meeting in Leicester.

I was a scientific organiser of the CIMMA2005 Mathematical Congress in Almeria.

I was the main organiser of the LMS Midlands Regional Meeting and Workshop on Teichmueller Theory and Cluster Algebras.

I was involved as an organiser in the research programme Homotopy Theory and Higher Categories at the CRM in Barcelona in the academic year 2007/2008. As part of this activity I organised a Workshop on Topological and Differentiable Stacks.

I was involved in organising an Advanced Course on Topological Quantum Field Theories in Almeria, 19 - 23 October 2009 and with the British Mathematical Colloquium (BMC 2011), which took place in Leicester on 18-21 April 2011. I organised the session on Algebraic Geometry and Number Theory.

Recently, I organised the LMS-CMI Research School Homotopy Theory and Arithmetic Geometry: Motivic and Diophantine Aspects at Imperial College London, 9-13 July 2018 and the LMS Midlands Regional Meeting and Workshop on Galois Covers, Grothendieck-Teichmueller Theory and Dessins d'enfants in Leicester on 4-7 June 2018. The proceedings are now published by Springer.

I was an organiser for the Workshop on Topological Methods in Group Representation Theory in Leicester on 19-22 November 2019 funded by the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research.

I am currently an organiser of the BIRS-CMO Workshop Moduli, Motives and Bundles – New Trends in Algebraic Geometry at BIRS-CMO Oaxaca from September 18 to 23, 2022.
