Invitation to the 2018 Employment Law Student Seminar

Theme – Termination of employment: A Comparative Perspective Postgraduate students are invited to attend the above international seminar. This annual event is organised by the European Working Group on Labour Law of which the Law School is a member (see http://www.le.ac.uk/law/euroworking/euro_work_group.html ). Academics and students from France, Germany, The Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom meet to discuss a current employment law topic.

This year’s theme is ‘Termination of employment: objective dismissal’.

Preparation and organisation
Help and support will be provided by the relevant academic staff in preparation for the seminar.

Students will need to write a national report on the topic (eg definition of termination, scope of the protection, substantive and procedural requirements, remedies, role of the courts, etc). This will be presented at the University of Castilla La Mancha (Ciudad Real campus).
Students will then be divided into four groups where each university will be represented. The purpose is to consider part(s) of their national reports in a comparative context. The working groups will present their findings at the end of the seminar.

The seminar is a great opportunity to learn more about British and supranational employment law and to be able to put it in a comparative context. Previous participants have thoroughly enjoyed meeting students studying employment law from other European countries.

Attendance at the seminar, accommodation and subsistence are usually free but you will need to pay for your travel and there may be a need to contribute £40 to the seminar this year.

Selection
There are four places available for students. Pascale Lorber is currently the United Kingdom academic representative. Paul McConnell has kindly accepted to be part of the academic team this year.

If you wish to attend, it is preferable that you have studied UK employment law before. Please send a short CV and a brief statement explaining why you would like to participate, to Pascale Lorber: pascale.lorber@le.ac.uk
The deadline for application is 1st December 2017
You will be informed shortly after that date whether you have been selected, anticipating the report and presentation to be completed by end of February 2018.
