Law PhD Scholarship (fee waiver) for home and EU students

We invite applications for two, three-year full Home/EU fee waivers. The scholarship will pay full-time University UK tuition fees for three years (£4260 pa). The scholarship is only open to new postgraduate researchers who start in January 2019.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a UK undergraduate (Bachelors) degree with at least first class or upper second class honours or an equivalent qualification from a recognised overseas institution, and should normally have completed a Masters course in a similar subject area to your proposed research, with an average mark above 60% in the course and at least 65% in the dissertation.

How to apply

Applications must include a complete set of documentation as listed below at the time the application is submitted

  • a research proposal, normally of 1000-1500 words
  • writing sample in which an argument is made for a conclusion, rather than merely describing the facts or the law.
  • a personal statement which explains why you are interested in the studentship, and why you would be a good person to appoint
  • all supporting documents, including proof that you meet the academic and English language entry requirements. (Supporting documents not in English must be accompanied by a certified English translation.)
  • two references from referees who are familiar with your academic work and who are able to comment on your ability to conduct research and to complete a PhD programme. We would prefer that you provide us with the names and contact details of these referees as part of your PhD application, so that we may obtain confidential references. In that case, please ensure that your referees submit the reference by the closing date set out above.

Closed - Graduate Teaching Assistant in Law (closing date 2 March 2018)

Leicester Law School invites applications for three full-time Graduate Teaching Assistant positions from September 2018 with a package worth £14,777 per year together with a UK/EU* tuition fee waiver.

The positions are available from 1 September 2018. The successful applicants will receive an annual stipend and salary package currently worth £14,777, and a full UK/EU tuition fee waiver. *The positions are open to international applicants as well but they must be able to fund the difference between the UK/EU fee and International fee for the duration of their studies.

The closing date for receipt of applications is 2 March 2018.

Closed – Graduate Teaching Assistant in Law (3 April 2017)

Leicester Law School invites applications for two full-time Graduate Teaching Assistant positions (0.2 FTE) from September 2017 with a package worth £14,553 per annum together with a UK/EU tuition fee waiver.

Two positions are available from 1 September 2017. There is some scope to adjust the start date to reflect individual circumstances.

The successful applicants will receive an annual stipend and salary package currently worth £14,553, and a full UK/EU tuition fee waiver. Funding for these posts is available for four years.

The closing date for receipt of applications is Monday 3 April 2017 (at 23:59).

Graduate Teaching Assistantships allow you to fund your PhD study through part-time teaching work with the University.

The successful applicant will have

  • Outstanding promise of teaching/research achievement
  • Proven competency in Law and will have, or be able to develop quickly, relevant knowledge of UK law as required by the teaching needs of the law school
  • High level of proficiency in English, sufficient to undertake teaching and administrative activities using English Language materials and to communicate effectively with staff and students
  • Evidence of good effective oral communication, presentation and training skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team on teaching related activities.
  • A commitment to high quality teaching

Eligibility

These positions are open to persons who are not current PhD students at the University of Leicester. They are open to applicants irrespective of nationality or place of previous residence.

The award covers tuition fees at the UK/EU rate only. International applicants, who do not ordinarily pay UK/EU tuition fees, must be able to demonstrate that they can fund the difference in tuition fee rates for the full four years of study.

Research areas and supervision

We welcome applications in any area of legal research within the research interests of our staff. It is advisable to identify one or more potential supervisors before making an application.

Candidates short-listed for interview will be contacted by the University. We hope to conduct interviews in the week starting 15 May 2017. Interviews will be held in person or by Skype, as appropriate.
