Sir Nicholas Green QC completed his LLB at Leicester University in 1980 and an LLM at the University of Toronto in Canada in 1981. He started professional life as a lecturer in law at the University of Southampton where he completed a Ph.D in 1985. He also taught for some years on the Master degree at London University (UCL).

He was called to the Bar in 1986 completing pupillage in 1987 and he was appointed a Queens Counsel in 1998.

At the Bar he specialised in all aspects of European, competition and regulatory, international, administrative and constitutional law. He appeared before all levels of the domestic English courts and he appeared frequently in international courts and tribunals including in international arbitrations on behalf of international companies, Governments and Sovereign Wealth Funds. At European level he appeared in approximately 100 cases before the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg.

As a judge of the Queen’s Bench Division he sits in a variety of jurisdictions including the Court of Appeal Criminal Division, the Administrative Court and in Tribunals such as the UTIAC (Upper Tribunal for Immigration and Asylum Appeals) and in the Competition Appeal Tribunal. He also sits for part of each judicial term on Circuit trying serious criminal cases, mainly murders.

  • Appointed a Recorder of the Crown Court in 2004
  • Elected Chairman of the Bar Council of England & Wales in 2010.
  • In 2011 he became joint Head of Chambers at Brick Court Chambers in London following the appointment of Jonathan Sumption to the Supreme Court
  • Between 2011 and 2016 he was Chairman of the Advocacy Training Council
  • He was appointed to the High Court, Queen’s Bench Division, in 2013
  • Appointed to sit as a Chairman in the Competition Appeals Tribunal in 2015
  • Appointed Vice Chair of the International Committee of the Judicial College in 2016
  • Appointed a Presiding Judge for the South Eastern Circuit in 2016
  • Appointed Chairman of the Law Commission in August 2018
  • Appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal in October 2018
