David Hodson OBE

Honorary Professor

David Hobson OBE is a distinguished alumnus of the University, having graduated in 1975 with the degree of LLB. Since 1978, he has been a Solicitor specializing in Family Law, co-founding The International Family Law Group LLP in 2007 of which he remains a Partner. As the name of the firm suggests, Mr Hodson specializes in providing legal advice and assistance to families that are international – by virtue of the nationalities of the spouses and children and/or the countries of their residence. Since 1995, he has also held a part-time appointment as Deputy District Judge in the Central Family Court, London.

Awarded the OBE in June 2014 for services to international family law, Mr Hodson has an outstanding international reputation as a leading practitioner in his field. Over the course of a career spanning more than 30 years, he has contributed greatly to the development of family law, providing significant leadership through, for example, chairing the Solicitors Family Law Association as well the Family Law Reform Group of the Centre for Social Justice. The latter in July 2009 produced the influential report “Every Family Matters”, which has had an important societal impact by informing subsequent legislation. He has played a notable role in the education of family lawyers, chairing the Solicitors Family Law Association’s Training Committee, presenting and editing teaching videos produced by Legal Network Television, and lecturing as a visiting professor at the University of Law. He has written and spoken on a wide range of family law topics and is regularly invited to speak at international conferences. He has also authored a number of books: “The International Family Law Practice” (Jordans fourth edition May 2015), the leading text book for lawyers on the subject; “Divorce Reform: A Guide to Lawyers and Mediators” (FT Law and Tax); "The Business of Family Law" (Jordans), a leading textbook on management of family law practices; and is co-author of the SFLA "Guide to Family Law in Europe". These contributions and achievements are (at least) equivalent to those to be expected for promotion to a personal Chair.

Since 2015, Mr Hodson has been making a significant and regular contribution to the University through involvement in the teaching of Family Law to undergraduates and the mentoring of students intending to pursue careers in this field. He has annually delivered a lecture to the students, and has set and assessed an Essay Competition, donating a 2-week expenses-paid placement to the winner in his London-based firm, The International Family Law Group (IFLG).
