Anna McCormack had been heavily involved in Pro Bono work throughout her time at Leicester, and for the last year had been Chair of the Pro Bono Group, overseeing ten Pro Bono projects and 300 student volunteers. Anna was commended for her success in developing new Pro Bono initiatives, as well as increasing the profile of Leicester’s Pro Bono offering. Anna commented “I am thrilled to have won the award for Best Contribution by an Individual Student to Pro Bono at the 2017 Student Awards. A special thank you to the staff and the wonderful Pro Bono Committee for putting together my nomination for the award. This award could not have been obtained without the immense dedication and enthusiasm that all members of Pro Bono have shown towards our Projects this year."

The Awards took place at the House of Commons on 27 April, and were attended by a number of Leicester students and staff. In addition to Anna’s success, Leicester was also nominated in the category of Best New Pro Bono activity. This nomination related to Project LIGHT, an innovative partnership between the Law and Medical Schools, providing legal and medical support and advice to homeless people in Leicester.

Francois du Bois, Head of Leicester Law School, commented “We are very proud of the fantastic Pro Bono work which is undertaken by our students. As well as enabling the students to develop their practical legal experience, Pro Bono provides invaluable support to the local community in Leicester.”
