Women in CS Leicester Student Group

University of Leicester Student group for women interested in Computer Science.

The Women in Computer Science Leicester group is here to promote Computer Science and to support female students with an interest in this subject. This is not restricted to the students of the Department of Informatics and we welcome other female students from different departments to join us.

This is an informal student-lead group run by Hawwa Hafesje and Nneka Kanu - Volunteer Student Ambassadors.

We meet every month on Wednesdays in term time and invite all women with an interest in Computer Science to join us on the third floor of the Charles Wilson building in the small side room (CW303) for coffee/tea, biscuits and chat.

We talk about networking events and career opportunities, geared towards women such as "IT's not just for boys", "WomENcourage" conference, "Grace Hopper" Conference, "BCS Colloquium" etc.

We are also working to set up free coding classes for females at our university campus through the Code First: Girls organization. General information about the free coding classes run by the Code First: Girls organization can be found here.

Chat about any issues you may be experiencing (good or bad!) and bring along any ideas you have to improve how our department supports our amazing ladies. I'll be happy to help you if we can, and if there is a need, and with your permission only, I can raise any issues with the department on your behalf (anonymously of course).

You can find out more by following either our Facebook group or our Twitter and our email is WCSLeicester@gmail.com.

Meeting dates will be advertised through our Facebook page. All meetings will be an hour. Please sign up your interests using this form here.

So even if it's just for the biscuits, come along, bring your friends and meet us!

What do group members say?

Amazing, friendly, so inspiring.. It's always great to network with other CS students to discuss similar issues and learn from their experiences. I'm so glad that I attended the meeting and I would definitely love to attend all the coming meetings :).. Hasna
The meeting was friendly, lovely, and fun. We had a nice laugh as well as exchanging honest comments and experiences related to team work and time management skills in IT environment. It was my first time attending the forum, and I will try to keep its forthcoming events in my calendar and I would encourage everyone to join - Nissreen

The Computer Science Women Society is an ideal model of the kind of support that women across all science fields should offer to one another.

Personally, it's a reminder that my dreams are attainable and my doubts are only part of the journey. Listening and learning from women who have similar struggles and are excelling, whilst remaining passionate about their careers, keeps me motivated. I hope to be in their shoes next year at some point in my computer science journey, doing things like supporting new students who like me have doubts that might be getting in the way of their success - Shalom
