Athena SWAN

Athena SWAN logoThe department is strongly committed to the Athena SWAN Charter; the advancement of women's careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) in higher education.

This is part of the wider support offered towards equality and diversity within the Department and flexible working for a balanced work and family life.

We fully support the beliefs underpinning the Charter:

  • The advancement of science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine is fundamental to quality of life across the globe.

  • It is vitally important that women are adequately represented in what has traditionally been, and is still, a male-dominated area.
  • Science cannot reach its full potential unless it can benefit from the talents of the whole population, and until women and men can benefit equally from the opportunities it affords.

The Department was delighted to receive its Athena SWAN Bronze Award following its submission in April 2013. This reflects the recognition of the current situation and the good practices that were already in place or have been introduced to support women in the department.

The Award was received on behalf of the Department by Karen Smith at the Award Ceremony on 7 November 2013; it was presented by Professor Dame Julia Higgins, Patron of Athena SWAN and Emeritus Professor at Imperial College London.
