Why study for a MPhil/PhD in Computer Science at Leicester

student at a computer

The Department has an international reputation for its research, which is loosely organised in five broad themes. Students should frame their projects so as to fall under one or more of these themes in order to be able draw from the collective expertise developed by staff members. Alternatively, students can choose from the list of concrete PhD topics.

The Department runs undergraduate degrees in Computer Science and organises and contributes to a number of one-year (12/15 months) full-time postgraduate degree programmes. It also contributes to other postgraduate programmes in Bioinformatics, Financial Mathematics and Computation, and Data Analysis for Business Intelligence.

The Department is involved in a number of national and European research projects in IT, involving both industrial and academic partners, giving postgraduates a chance to participate in the shaping of the Information Society and interact with fellow postgraduates across Europe.

Informal Advice

Besides a solid background and a strong motivation it is useful to have spent some thoughts on the following before applying:

  • your research topic
  • your future supervisor
  • your financial support.

The topic you propose should fit within the research themes of the department, it should lie within the research interests of your proposed supervisor or be chosen from the list of concrete PhD topics. It may help your application if you explain briefly why you are interested in your proposed area of research, and what in your background makes you well prepared for this topic.

You are most welcome to contact us, and we would encourage you to discuss your research plan with your potential supervisor before applying.

Financial Support

Information about departmental funding opportunities can be found here.

You should also think about where financial support will come from. Grant proposals have to be written with care and may require communication with and feedback from the department.
