Personal details

PhD

I am a Reader in the Department of Infection Immunity & Inflammation at the University of Leicester and an Honorary Consultant Nephrologist in the John Walls Renal Unit, Leicester General Hospital. I qualified from Manchester University Medical School in 1992 with Honours and undertook my clinical training in Manchester, Leeds and Leicester. My PhD focused on the interaction between IgA and the glomerular mesangial cell and my postdoctoral research has characterised a number of important pathogenic pathways in IgA nephropathy. My research group has interests in lymphocyte homing and B cell activation, IgA1 O-glycosylation, elucidation of the 3-dimensional structure of IgA1 and development of tubulointerstitial scarring in IgA nephropathy. I am on the steering committee and treasurer of the International IgA Nephropathy Network and was a member of the group that developed the Oxford Classification of IgA Nephropathy. I am also actively involved in clinical trials in kidney disease and I am a member of the UK Glomerulonephritis Clinical Study Group, UK Kidney Research Consortium and NIHR UK Clinical Research Network Renal Specialty Group.

I am also Head of the Postgraduate Specialty School of Clinical Academic Training, Health education East Midlands.

Research

The IgA Nephropathy Research Group

Nephrology 2016

  • Our group are interested in a number of aspects of the pathogenesis of this common glomerulonephritis. We host a number of undergraduate and postgraduate students, Academic Foundation doctors, Academic Clinical Fellows and Academic Lecturers and are always happy to be contacted by clinicians and scientists wishing to develop an interest in research in kidney disease.

Current work themes

  • Identification of novel mesangial cell  IgA receptors and defining their role in IgA nephropathy. Dr Karen Molyneux, Senior Research Scientist
  • The role of microRNAs in tubulointerstitial fibrosis in IgA nephropathy. Dr Izabella Pawluczyk
  • Elucidating the 3-dimensional structure of the IgA1 molecule in IgA nephropathy. Dr See Cheng Yeo, MD student and visiting Fellow from Singapore
  • Understanding the role of filtered IgA on proximal tubule activation in IgA nephropathy. Dr Chee Kay Cheung, MRC Clinical Training Fellow
  • Defining the genetic contribution to IgA1 O-glycosylation in IgA nephropathy. Mr David Wimbury, PhD student
