Personal details

After a first undergraduate degree in modern languages at Leeds University, I studied medicine at the University of Leicester, graduating with Honours in 2001. I am now an Honorary Consultant Nephrologist at the Leicester General Hospital with clinical responsibility for the Leicester Dialysis Programme, and I'm lead clinician for exercise rehabilitation in that group. I also a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation at the University of Leicester with a personal focus on clinical research in the area of cardiovascular disease in renal patients. My research into cardiac injury in dialysis patients has informed national and international guidelines on the management of blood pressure, was cited as the key UK research abstract of the last decade and led to the award of ‘European Young Scientist’ at the European Dialysis and Transplant Association Congress held in Stockholm in 2008. In February 2014, I was awarded a Clinician Scientist Fellowship by the National Institute of Health Research.

Research

Modification of cardiovascular risk in patients with end-stage renal disease including interventions to:

  • Reduce left ventricular hypertrophy (which correlates with poor outcomes)
  • Improve cardiac structure and function
  • Positively impact upon patients’ quality of life

Use of new, state of the art imaging techniques to assess cardiac function in patients with kidney disease.

Identification of novel biomarkers, including cell-derived microparticles, and their application in risk stratification and management.
