Biography

Steven Spencer is the Director of The Salvation Army International Heritage Centre in London and co-supervisor of the ESRC funded PhD ‘The Salvation Army’s overseas settlements and colonies, 1890-1939’ at Leicester.

Research Interests

I am interested in all aspects of the history of The Salvation Army around the world. My recent research has focused on:

  • The Salvation Army’s role in the 1885 Maiden Tribute of Modern Babylon case
  • The design of Salvation Army meeting halls
  • The Salvation Army’s stance on alcohol
  • The development of The Salvation Army’s publishing department
