I came to Leicester in 2013 as a head of college and I most recently worked as the university’s provost. I was previously at the University of Liverpool, and before that I worked for nearly twenty years at Monash University in Melbourne. My research has focused largely on questions of poverty, social justice and histories of ordinary lives during the nineteenth and twentieth, as well as comparative histories. I teach and supervise across the range of modern social and cultural histories, particularly of the United States, Australia and Europe, with a particular focus on histories of crime and deviance, urban history, digital histories, the history of masculinity, histories of war and remembrance and the historical analysis of film, photography and other visual sources.

Teaching and supervision

My full-time and institution-wide role is the University’s Director of Educational Innovation, but I also contribute to teaching and dissertation supervision in History.
