Role

I am the volunteer project manager on the Leicestershire Victoria County History project. In many counties the Victoria County History is the first port of call for anyone wanting to know more about the history of a specific town or village. My role is to recruit, train and work with volunteer historians in specific parishes to produce parts of the research, to complete other research, and to write the parish histories or support volunteers in writing draft histories for publication online. Each publication covers 1,000 years or more of history, including landscape, communications, population and settlement, landownership, economic, social and religious history and local government. The volunteers receive training in interpreting non-documentary sources, and reading and interpreting original documents from many different periods. Since 2010 I have written or co-authored three parish histories which have been published as paperbacks by the University of London, for Castle Donington, Buckminster and Sewstern, and Ibstock. A fourth, for Lutterworth, is nearing completion and should be published in 2022. I have edited volunteer-produced parish histories for Kirby Bellars, Leire and Welby, which have been published online. I have also devised and led several summer projects with student volunteers, which have produced further parish history sections, also published online. In 2019, I began working with a further new volunteer group in Loughborough, to produce a history of that parish. My role also includes outreach work, website design and management, and social media.
