Biography

BA (Hon), MA, PhD

After studying for a BA (Hons) in Combined Humanities at Newbold College (accredited via the Open University) and completing an MA in Race and Ethnic Studies at the University of Warwick, I worked on a cataloguing and outreach project at the National Archives at Kew concerning original Colonial Office correspondence sent by governors in the Caribbean between 1780 and 1926. I then completed a PhD in Sociology at the University of Warwick. My thesis, ‘A Colonial Society in a Post-colonial World: Bermuda and the Question of Independence’, interrogated how the colonial past informs contemporary political debate.

Research Themes

My research draws on methodologies and methods from history and sociology to better understand the histories of colonialism and slavery and their legacies within Bermuda, the Caribbean and the United Kingdom. Spanning from the late eighteenth century to the present day, my work encompasses explorations of colonial institutions, governance, migration and socio-political inclusion/exclusion. This research has included investigations of Bermudian socio-political debates, Caribbean slave societies as well as the relationships between institutions and marginalised groups in the UK. Collaborate partnerships have been key to the way that my research has developed.
