Research Excellence 2014

The Guardian league table for REF2014 has ranked Leicester in the top 10 History departments. Navigate to "Ref 2014: subject results in full" to find out more about our ranking.

The REF (Research Excellence Framework) measures the research performance of universities across the UK. The Guardian uses these results to rank departments by the percentage of research submitted that was either 4* (world leading) or 3* (internationally excellent). With 85% of its research rated 3/4*, Leicester is placed =6th among UK History departments.

The Times Higher uses a different ranking system. Here the School of History has climbed fifteen places from 38th in RAE2008 to 23rd in REF2014 (out of 83 departments). Our books, articles and chapters have been ranked even higher. Our output/publications score (3.10) is equal with Cambridge in 10th place. We are No. 1 in the UK for the percentage of our publications rated either world leading or internationally excellent (85.7%).  And the School is tied in 11th place for its research environment. This follows our recent NSS score of 93% for overall student satisfaction. Together these results demonstrate the synergy between high quality research and high quality teaching. They reinforce the School’s position among the strongest History departments in the UK.
