Two new PhD students join TIMMS in order to explore vital issues to help reduce perinatal mortality

We’re really pleased to welcome Julia Clark and Ruth Matthews as PhD students with the TIMMS team.

Julia joined the team in October 2016 to undertake a PhD studentship exploring the facilitators and barriers to the implementation of national clinical guidelines for reduced fetal movements. This is a collaborative project between TIMMS and SAPPHIRE, with qualitative methods and sociological theory shaping Julia’s exploration of this widely recognised risk factor for stillbirth. The research is funded by the University of Leicester, with additional support from The Health Foundation.

Ruth has been a valued member of the TIMMS team for two years as a statistician but is now furthering her interest in perinatal mortality by commencing a PhD studentship. In her work, Ruth will be investigating the interactions between socioeconomic risk factors using a person centred approach to identify subgroups of the population at high risk of perinatal mortality and to explore the extent to which the distribution of high risk sub groups can explain geographical variation in rates in the UK. The research is funded by the University of Leicester.
