My PhD research will investigate the things that influence staff – patient / carer interaction and communication in ICU and A&E. I will also be using video-reflexive ethnography to investigate if / how it is possible to improve these interactions, and finally I will evaluate video-reflexive ethnography as an improvement method.

I am a sociologist by background – I studied sociology and social policy at the University of York for my BA, and was awarded an ESRC Studentship for my MA in society, science and nature at Lancaster University. My MA thesis “Ill-communication and activist network theory” was an ethnography of a campaign to close a chemical factory, in which it became apparent that the main participants were talking past each other, because of their different understandings of the environment and harm.

Outside of my academic work I don’t have much going on – my young family are not a hobby, and I do much more than ‘spend time with them’. But it sounds a little daft putting ‘stopping my 10 month old son falling down the stairs when he decides to go mountaineering up them’ as a pastime...
