Emma Angell graduated with a BSc in Physics with Space Science & Technology. She returned to education to do an MPhil Medical Physics, and later an MSc Health Services Research, all at the University of Leicester.

Her career has included being an administrative assistant at a medical journal; an information officer then systems manager in an acute trust; an associate medical physicist; and manager of two local research ethics committees. Emma says she was fascinated to see how differently the ethics committees operated and undertook a research project comparing the outcomes of three committees reviewing the same 18 applications over 12 months. The National Research Ethics service was interested in the results and provided funding for several further studies resulting in advice for researchers on ways to improve their applications, and to research ethics committees on ways to improve the service.

During this time, in 2006, she joined SAPPHIRE. Emma then became involved with a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)-funded project to develop a way to measure how well primary care organisations respond to the needs of patients. “I was interested in how the policies encouraging primary care to become more responsive were formed and implemented, and this is the focus of my PhD,” says Emma, who currently combines her studies with the role of Research Associate and Teaching Fellow.
