Personal Details

I did a Biotechnology BSc at the University of Salamanca (Spain), and a MSc in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Biomedicine at the Complutense University of Madrid.

I undertook my PhD in Health Sciences at the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, University of La Laguna (Tenerife, Spain). My PhD focused on the study of the implications of genetic susceptibility and microbiome shifts in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). In parallel, I was also collaborating on research projects focused on the genetics of other complex respiratory diseases, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and asthma. After completing my PhD, I worked as a Research Associate in the same research group.

I joined the Genetic Epidemiology Group at the University of Leicester in 2021 to continue developing my research. I currently hold a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowship.

Research

Genetic and environmental factors influence COVID-19 susceptibility and outcomes, including the development of ARDS, characterized by pulmonary infiltrates and severe hypoxemia, and short- and long-term pulmonary fibrosis (i.e., lung scarring). These lung pathologies have a high mortality and there are no specific treatment options or effective prognostic methods for patients. The aim of my research is to perform a genomic epidemiology study of ARDS and pulmonary fibrosis in patients with COVID-19 to identify novel genetic risk factors and to develop risk prediction models, which could enhance COVID-19 patient stratification for those at increased risk of lung sequela.
