The Department of Health Sciences is committed to providing an excellent working environment for its staff and in November 2016 was successful in achieving it's second Silver Athena SWAN award. This national award recognises the advancement of gender equality. This level of award acknowledges significant and sustained progression and achievement in promoting gender equality. The Department of Health Sciences is the first academic department at the University of Leicester to achieve this status. Since our award we have strived to further embed a progressive, equality driven environment in which all our staff can thrive. Our University, the University of Leicester was awarded the Athena SWAN (Scientific Women's Academic Network) bronze award in 2008 which was renewed in 2011.

Feedback from the Athena SWAN panel in 2013 included commendation on:

  • Publishing the draft application on the departmental website was "an excellent approach to transparency and inclusivity. They felt this reflected well on the culture of the department, as did the 90% response rate to the survey."
  • The panel felt that the ‘Super seminar’ series is a good idea, and praised the gender balance amongst the speakers.
  • The panel praised the use of different surveys for different groups, and felt that this was a good indicator that the department is seeking a fully inclusive culture.
  • The two case studies "were both excellent indicators of a supportive culture."
