Transmission Electron Microscope image of the unusual case of swollen human respiratory cilia

These were discovered in the airways of patients with rare genetic ciliopathies.

Ciliopathies include diseases where the intra-axonemal retrograde transport proteins malfunction.

We believe this causes accumulation of cellular material in the cilia tip, the cilia do not move very well and recurrent chest infections are common in these patients.
