Hope

Approximately 3.3 billion people are at risk of malaria and with 214 million episodes annually, 88% of which occur in the African region. Cerebral malaria, the most severe complication of malarial infection, causes death in approximately 15-25% of cases, the majority of whom are children.

This image is a colour representation of parasitized retinal vessels in a Malawian child measured using a high resolution imaging technique called hand-held optical coherence tomography (HH-OCT). It is hoped that this technique will improve the diagnosis and treatment of this disease and in so doing reduce deaths caused by malaria globally.
