Four rotting fish

A sequence of images showing how the characteristic features of a primitive fish-like creature, amphioxus, a close relative of vertebrates, change during decay. These experiments allowed Leicester palaeobiologists to recognise a previously unknown bias in our understanding of the history of life. Colours are caused by interference between the experimental equipment and the light illuminating the specimens. Image credit Mark Purnell, Rob Sansom, Sarah Gabbott.
