Registering for a New Course

New course registration photoAs a new research student you need to register at the start of your course to confirm your place on the programme. You also need to register to gain access to University services and facilities such as the University Library and your University IT account.

Registration is a quick and easy process.

Follow the steps below to register for your research degree course:

Step 1   Sign up for My Student Record

Login to the student portal and create your account by clicking on the ‘New User’ button and follow the on-screen instructions.

A secure email will be sent to the personal email address you provided on your application - you should click on the link within this email to set up a password.

Step 2 Pay your fees

You need to pay 50% of your tuition fee liability before you can register online. To check the exact amount you need to pay please contact the relevant office:

Full- and Part-Time Degrees: refer to the campus based postgraduate fees pages

Distance Learning Degrees: refer to the payment schedule sent with your offer letter

Further information on how to pay can be found at:

Step 3 Upload your Photo

Please upload a photo of yourself which we can use to produce your ID / Library card.

You can do this by clicking on the "registration" tab and following the on-screen instructions.

You should do this as soon as possible so there is no delay in producing your student ID card.

Step 4 Register Online

Login to the student portal and click on the 'registration' tab, following the on-screen prompts.

Once complete you will be given your University of Leicester username, and you will set up a new password.

Step 5 Create your Email Account

You must create a new email account for your research course.

If you have previously been a student at the University, and already have a username and email address of the format XXX@student.le.ac.uk this will automatically expire and you must therefore create a new account when prompted to do so.

If you already have a staff email account then you will still need to create a student email account when prompted. This is because your staff account will not give you access to the relevant IT systems.

Step 6 ID and Visa Check for Full and Part Time Students

Home/EU students

As a full or part time student you will need to go through an ID check before you receive your student ID / Library card.

Your ID check will normally be undertaken at the Charles Wilson Building, ground floor, and you will need to bring one of the following original forms of ID with you:

  • your passport
  • full birth certificate

International students

If you are an international research student - i.e., you are from outside the European Union - and you are studying with us on a full-time basis, then you will need to bring your temporary travel vignette/visa and passport with you to the Student Services Centre, Charles Wilson Building and complete a visa checkpoint.

You will not be fully registered until you complete this part of the process.

Step 7 Collect your Documents

Once you have successfully registered online and completed an ID check then you can collect your documents:

  • your student ID / Library card (which also gives you buildings access)
  • a letter of registration to confirm that you a student of the University
  • a letter enabling you to open a UK bank account
  • handbook and induction materials from your department

International students are also able to collect Biometric Residents Permit (BRP) documents
