At our Virtual Degree Day Celebration on 14 July 2020 the Dennis Field Award was for the first time presented to three of our graduating students.

The School of Geography, Geology and the Environment awards the Dennis Field Award each year to the final year student who throughout the course has displayed qualities of scholarship, enthusiasm, determination and integrity.

This year panel members were so impressed they could not spilt the final three contenders, thus awarded the prize three ways.

Omar Amri

Recipients of the Dennis Field Award 2020
Omar Amri, Maduo Makwati and Alex Ruston - recipients of the Dennis Field Award 2020

Omar came to the University of Leicester with a very strong recommendation of his teacher – everything Omar has achieved at Leicester has justified that recommendation. Omar has an incredible work ethic achieving first class marks throughout his degree. As well as being a top student, Omar has contributed widely to the University as a University Student Ambassador, a highly active Course Rep, a Student Ambassador for Geology offer holder and open days and the Treasurer on the Society of Economic Geologists Student Chapter. In his role as Treasurer, Omar was involved in the organisation of (alongside the other committee members) a number of extra-curricular events, including the first aid training course and the very successful Volcanic Massive Sulphides workshop. Omar has a mature approach, a positive outlook, takes time to support his fellow students and has championed the student experience through his work on the Student-Staff committee. Omar has demonstrated all the qualities of scholarship, enthusiasm, determination and integrity for the Dennis Field Award and we have no doubt that Omar will continue to be a great ambassador for Geology at Leicester.

Maduo Makwati

Throughout her degree Maduo has been a hard-working, high-achieving yet self-effacing student; Maduo quietly gets on with work but always has time to help others around her. She was a great ambassador for Geology at Leicester during her school placement for the third year module ‘Earth Science in Education’. Maduo has supported the admissions team, featuring for two years in our brochure and enabling us to reach out to her school in Botswana. Maduo has been actively involved in promoting a diverse and inclusive culture through her role as Wellbeing and Inclusion Ambassador for the geology PCSB (Peter Colley Sylvester-Bradley) Society. In this role Maduo has also worked alongside the School’s Geography Society for events supporting charities. Maduo proactively promoted the PCSB society to current students during timetabled sessions this year to ensure a committee was established for the next academic year. Graduating with a first class degree, Maduo possesses all the qualities of scholarship, enthusiasm, determination and integrity required for the Dennis Field Award.

Alex Rutson

Alex is a student who from day one at the University of Leicester has naturally tried to help others.  In practical classes Alex offers assistance to others with a natural humility.  Alex has involved himself in student societies, and was geology PCSB (Peter Colley Sylvester-Bradley) Society president in his third year. Alex is willing to just get on and do, and solve problems when they arise. Supporting all his friends through challenging times, he often puts others’ needs before his own. Alex has been an invaluable Student Ambassador for several years now. He became "lead ambassador" when we needed help training students. Alex graciously said yes when we asked him to stay on for a second year, giving up many Saturdays to promote Geology to the next generation of students. Alex is so reliable and pragmatic as to seem like an extra member of staff.  We’re not sure how we'll manage without him! Graduating with a first class degree, Alex displays all the qualities of scholarship, enthusiasm, determination and integrity that are part of the Dennis Field Award.

Many congratulations Omar, Maduo and Alex.
