Geologists from the School played a prominent part in the Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits (SGA) Meeting in Glasgow at the end of August which was attended by nearly 700 delegates from around the world.

Presented Talks

  • Dr Dave Holwell - Fertilisation of porphyry magmas by Cu-Au sulfide melt mobilisation in the lower crust
  • Professor Gawen Jenkin - Gold and critical element recovery with environmentally-benign Deep Eutectic Solvents
  • Dr Dan Smith - Challenges and Opportunities in Tellurium Supply
  • Laura Ward - Ni-Cu-(PGE) fertility of the Zambezi belt rift magmatism: source and temporal controls

…and staff were co-authors on a number of other papers.

School staff were also heavily involved in the organisation of the conference

    • Dr Dave Holwell and Daryl Blanks delivered a 2 day pre-conference shortcourse on “Advances in exploration targeting for magmatic Ni-Cu-PGE mineral systems”
    • Dr Dan Smith was a convenor for the session on “Mineral Resources for Green Growth”
    • Dr Dave Holwell was a convenor for the session on “New discoveries – new views: Advances in the Science of Mineral Exploration”
    • Professor Gawen Jenkin was convenor for the session on “The changing face of metal extraction - geology, biology and geometallurgy”
    • Gawen (on right) at the Opening Ceremony

Professor Gawen Jenkin was also Chair of the entire scientific programme which involved organising the reviews of the 500 papers presented and compiling them into four proceedings volumes totalling 1900 pages (with some help from Dan and Eva at the end), as well as scheduling the programme.
    • Many Leicester alumni attended and it was a great opportunity to catch up. The conference was a great success for the Applied Geologists with many new links forged and much haggis eaten!
