Mel Mason joined the Department of Geodesy & Geophysics in 1966 and worked with Dai Davies, Drum Matthews, Fred Gray, Keith Louden, Bob White, Nick McCave and Martin Sinha on a variety of scientific marine studies. Geographical areas of interest have been the Red Sea, Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea, Indian Ocean, North Sea and Irish Sea.  He was part of the Bullard team designing, developing and deploying a range of instruments which included Radio Seismic Refraction Sonobuoys, Seismic Timing Systems, Sea Bed Magnetometers, Reflection Profilers, Sea Bed Seismometers, Heat Flow and Marine Sediment Transport Instruments, and Electro Magnetic Sounders.  Development also included some land based seismic instrumentation and recorders. He was responsible for the day to day running of the Electronics Laboratory and since his retirement in 2002 he has been a co-curator with Tim Owen of the Bullard Instrument Archive.
