Geography Society

Welcome from the GeogSoc President

Hello everyone,

Geogsoc PresidentMy name is James, and I am a third year BSc Geography student. I was elected as this years Geography Society President as part of a committee of 12 other geographers which will work to provide you with a fun and friendly society for the coming year.

The society plays a significant role in the department, establishing links between staff and students. Being part of the society gives students opportunities to enhance their University experience. All years and course types including Masters students and postgraduates of Geography can be members of the society, which creates an excellent network of students.

The Geography Society is entirely student run, but with full support from the School. There are many social events planned throughout the year such as bar crawls, the Christmas party and the final event of the Summer Ball. But if drinking is not your thing, then we have other events such as quiz nights, and day trips planned! All of the events are planned with the society members in mind, to ensure that ALL members gain from being part of our society.

As well as socials there are other events planned throughout the year. This year we will be running several events to raise money for charity, or to stimulate awareness about the environment. Suggestions from students are always welcome!

Furthermore, along with Birmingham, we are one of the only two EGEA accredited Geography Societies in the UK. Our EGEA representative will be running student exchanges in the year which are a great way of getting involved with the society and EGEA too! For more information about EGEA visit http://www.egea.eu/about/

So, regardless of what your interests are, the Geography Society have events for you. There are many ways to get involved with the Geography Society and to meet new friends! Come find us in the Geography Department or at freshers fair on the 28th and 29th September, and get ready for the exciting opportunities that are in store over the next year!
