Forests and Peatlands

The Forests and Peatlands research focus area has produced several influential publications and funded research projects targeting anthropogenic and climate-related impacts on the structure and function of forested and peatland environments. We have a broad-based methodological approach, including remotely sensed data and in situ measurements such as eddy flux towers.

Our work ranges from boreal regions to tropical forests, and we focus on disturbances such as wildfire and deforestation for agriculture. Peatlands and forested ecosystems are of central importance in terms of feedbacks to climate and impacts on human health.

Our research has involved many post-graduate and undergraduate researchers, many of whom focus on the sustainable management of forests and peatlands, and identify areas vulnerable to loss or degradation.
