Summary

This project, the ESA Fire-CCI (Fire-CCI) is concerned with providing a global long term fire disturbance record from 1995 onwards constructed from multi sensor satellite data.

The final product will be a suite of global validated burned area products mapped from data provided by the following satellite sensors: the Along-Track Scanning Radiometer (ATSR); SPOT VEGETATION (VGT); and Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS). The data sets will consist of burned patches with pixel (1km x 1km) and grid scale (0.5 x 0.5 degrees) resolution.

Our focus at the University of Leicester is to develop and implement a method which combines the results of the burned area products from ATSR, VGT and MERIS to produce a single Integrated Global Burned Area Product (IGBAP).

The development and specifications of this product involves direct interaction with the end users, climate researchers, who are interested in the extent, timing and location of biomass burning since fire disturbance is estimated to contribute to up to 30% of green house gas emissions. The product will also be made available to assist the wider fire science community.

The Fire-CCI project is part of Phase One of the ESA Climate Change Initiative. Further detailed information and project documentation is available in the [2] Fire-CCI website.
