After completion of my BSc in Geography from the University of Birmingham and MSc in Environmental Management and Earth Observation from the IESSG at the University of Nottingham, I worked in the commercial sector; processing image and positional data for aerial survey (Blom UK). Followed by a research and production role at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) working on the UK Land Cover Map 2007 (LCM2007).

I then went on to complete my PhD entitled ‘High Resolution Remote Sensing for Landscape Scale Restoration of Peatland’ at the University of Manchester. This research investigated the application of airborne hyperspectral remote sensing to monitor the vegetation response to a large scale peatland restoration project in the uplands of the Peak District National Park in the UK. This project was funded by NERC and sponsored by Natural England.

In my first postdoc position at the University of Leicester I returned to land cover mapping as project lead on the UK element of the Corine Land Cover Map 2012 (CLC2012). This was the central part of the Pan-European component of the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service, overseen by the European Environment Agency (EEA).

I currently work on the NERC BESS program rethinking the way in which Earth Observation can be used for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Service monitoring.

Research Interests

My primary research interests are in applied terrestrial remote sensing. I am keen to build upon work from my PhD in the field of ecological remote sensing and monitoring vegetation response to environmental change working at a range of scales including monitoring of large scale ecosystem processes as well as improving the understanding of single system interactions.

Understanding changing landscapes and the monitoring and valuation of ecosystem services through the use of earth observation data and methods is my current focus, looking at better exploitation of earth observation for biodiversity and ecosystem services monitoring.

I am still interested in land cover mapping and change detection and see the importance of this in earth surface monitoring.

Impact, Enterprise and Outreach

I sit on the council of the Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry Society (RSPSoc), chairing the Special Interest Groups (SIGs).

In 2012-2014 I was a named representative for the National Reference Centre (NRC) for Land Cover, advising the National Focal Points (NFP), DEFRA in the case of the UK, on matters feeding in to and out of the EEA and European Commission.
