Geography graduates have better than average chance of securing full time paid employment.

The latest graduate destinations survey has revealed that Leicester geography graduates have a better than average chance of securing full time paid employment when compared to other geography graduates. Results show that over the past five years, 55% of Leicester's graduates took up full time paid work, compared to 52% nationally. Around 1 in 5 of our graduates undertake full time further study, identical to the national figure. Unemployment rates are around 5%. The survey also shows that, on average in the past three years, over 60% of those taking employment have secured well paid graduate positions.

Professor Heiko Balzter, Head of the Department of Geography, said

In these challenging economical conditions, we need graduates who are skilful, articulated, engaging and can stand out from the crowd. These results show that our graduates have a edge over our competitors and demonstrates that employers are happy to take our graduates on board, in well-paid graduate jobs. Also, many of our graduates decide to move on to further Masters or PhD careers. Geographers are tackling some very important issues such as development, aid, energy, climate and environmental change, poverty, natural hazards, economy, and I fully believe the opportunities for geographers will be diverse, exciting and rewarding for many years to come. My colleagues and I do what we can to help our students along the way.
