Dr Martin Evans finds out how displaced people are rebuilding their lives after years of war in Senegal, West Africa

Dr Martin Evans has recently been conducting field research in the Lower Casamance region of Senegal, scene of West Africa's longest-running civil conflict.

Security conditions along the region's border with Guinea-Bissau have been improving in recent years, allowing some of the tens of thousands of people displaced from the area in the 1990s to return and reconstruct their villages and livelihoods. On his way back to the UK, Dr Evans stopped off in Dakar to talk with IRIN, the United Nations humanitarian news service, about what he had found. Read the full report here .
