Colin Hewitt studied Immunology at King’s College London with an industrial year at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology. After graduating with a first class BSc, he studied for a PhD in human T cell immunology starting at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund Tumour Immunology Unit at University College London and moving with the lab to Charing Cross Hospital Medical School, Imperial College London, where he finished his PhD.
After obtaining his PhD, Colin worked on the cloning and expression of antigen specific human T cell antigen receptors at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund Laboratories at Lincolns Inn Fields, London and then on superantigens and house dust mite allergens at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College London.
In 1993, Colin joined the newly opened Centre for Mechanisms of Human Toxicity at the University of Leicester University on a joint MRC - University of Leicester Fellowship. Here, he worked on the immunological mechanisms of allergies to antibiotics, the allergenicity of house dust mites, immunological responses to therapeutic streptokinase, and respiratory virus exacerbated asthma and childhood wheeze.
In 2001, he was appointed Lecturer in Immunology in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Leicester and in 2004 moved to the Department of Genetics.
Colin is a licenced bird ringer and contributes ringing and biometric data to the British Trust for Ornithology. These data on the abundance, survival of adults and chicks, breeding success and migratory movements are used in nationally coordinated studies of bird demographics conducted by the BTO.
