Research Interests

Leptothorax acervorum queen

Male Triops cancriformis

I am interested in the evolution of complex traits, such as social organization and sexual mode, and the role of both genes and environment on these traits.  I am also interested in the dynamics and resolution of social conflicts within animal societies.

Current Projects

  • The role of genes and social environment in regulating social organisation (Ben Braim's BBSRC funded PhD studentship, co-supervisor Prof. Bambos Kyriacou, Dept Genetics, University of Leicester)
  • RAD marker association mapping of polymorphic social organisation (NBAF627; with Ben Braim, & Dr Yannick Wurm, QMW, U of London)
  • The evolution of reproductive mode in mixed mating tapole shrimps, Triops cancriformis (Tom Mathers' NERC CASE funded PhD, with Dr A Gomez, U of Hull & Dr R Jenner, NHM)
  • Unmasking the effects of ploidy limited expression (Mark Harrison's NERC funded PhD, co-supervised by Dr Eamonn Mallon, Dept Biology, University of Leicester)
  • Faster-haploid? Testing the evolutionary effects of ploidy-limited expression (NBAF829; with Mark Harrison & Dr Eamonn Mallon)
