Life after university

Careers information

There are numerous careers for students who have graduated with a degree in a core discipline like English. Rather than closing off options, a degree in English opens a host of opportunities for employment.

The skills you will have acquired - of articulacy in spoken and written language, mastery of complex analytical approaches, problem-solving, an understanding of team-work and of self-motivated independent study - make you a very good catch for employers.

What next?

An Undergraduate Degree in English from the University of Leicester opens a multitude of career pathways, from areas as diverse as journalism, marketing, industry and the Civil Service.

What you will have gained

Upon graduation you will be equipped with the variety of transferable skills which are highly valued by potential employers across a range of professions.

You will enter the job market with superb oral and written communication skills, research expertise and training garnered from your dissertation work, basic IT skills as well as the ability to present an argument lucidly in writing and/or in speech.

You will have developed your interpretative abilities through immersion in scholarly documents, and have also improved your time management skills and problem-solving abilities. In addition to independent, self-motivated study, you will all have had training and experience of team-work.

As well as this range of skills, which are developed throughout the course of the degree, English undergraduates have the opportunity to undertake a number of vocational courses run by the School and the University’s Career Developement Service. For instance, the School runs a Certificate in Employability Scheme which is open to all second year students and the School sponsors a number of students to undertake the Leicester Award for Employability.
